M. Sullivan & Son Ltd. (Sullivan), one of Canada's oldest family-owned construction companies located in Arnprior, Ontario, is currently looking for a Civil Estimator. We provide a dynamic work environment and offer a competitive salary and benefit package.


The Civil Estimator is responsible for all actions required to prepare estimates, proposals and tender documents for large and small sitework and civil construction projects. This includes estimating the cost of labour, material, and equipment, as well as the analysis of subtrade requirements for upcoming projects.


The Civil Estimator is responsible for all aspects of construction project estimating such that they must be able to complete the entire bid from initiation to completion of the tender in a timely manner.



Your Duties


While the Civil Estimator is responsible for a multitude of duties, the main functions include:

  • Works collaboratively with the Estimating team, obtain bidding documents, determine the scope of work, and define the contractual requirements of the project
  • Develops bid strategy in conjunction with the Chief Estimator and SVP, Project Pursuit
  • Solicits and coordinates sub-trade tenders and supplier quotations for labour, material, and equipment to meet project specifications and budget requirements, utilizing BuildingConnected bid management software
  • Prepares estimates for self-performed work, utilizing Sullivan crews and equipment, with historic productivity rates
  • Performs quantity take-offs utilizing onscreen software
  • Quantifies all aspects of the tender documents using automated estimating processes, systems and documentation procedures
  • Prepares detailed project cost estimates and bids for senior management review and approval
  • Creates baseline schedules using a Gantt Chart format for approval by senior management (to determine project length and overheads)
  • Monitors cost and schedule fluctuations to make appropriate revisions to cost estimates
  • Prepares estimates for change orders as they pertain to civil scope of work
  • Participates in validation exercises on IPD projects
  • Applies value engineering techniques to improve productivity and lower costs
  • Completes post-bid analysis on successful and unsuccessful bids
  • Participates in hand-over meetings with Operations on successful contract awards
  • Works collaboratively with Project Managers to negotiate and award contracts to successful sub-contractors, as required
  • Contributes current cost and productivity information into the company database
  • Prepares quotation letters to clients
  • Continues to be a resource for Project Managers on estimating clarity throughout construction



Your Skills

  • Conceptual civil estimating skills
  • Ability to read and interpret civil and sitework construction drawings and specifications
  • Ability to lead and work collaboratively in a team environment
  • Excellent organizational, planning, and time management skills
  • Ability to communicate effectively with internal and external partners



What You'll Need to Succeed

  • 3+ years experience in a civil estimating role
  • Post-secondary education in a related field of study
  • PQS, P. Eng, or CET designation preferred
  • Experience with and proficiency in MS Office suite, specifically MS Project
  • Experience with and proficiency in Timberline an asset
  • Extensive knowledge of the construction industry and generally accepted estimating principles and practices
